What is Sony Actually doing with the Xperia Smartphones?

As per recent Sony announcement, it's latest model Xperia 1 VII in 2025 seems to be just like it's other non flagship models whose manufacturing is no more the company's business. This means the Xperia 1 VII is manufactured not by the owning company itself but by OEM.

Well this is not any surprise as there are several other smartphone companies who follow this trend of using Original Equipment Manufacturers to manufacture their smartphones instead of producing it under their own system. But it's just about the manufacturing which is the job of the OEM and not the design.

The product designing and specifications remains the owning company's part of job whereas the OEM fulfills the demand of the company by manufacturing the products as per the company's need, specifications, design and standard.

What is the recent Update?

Even few days back it was the company itself to do right from designing to manufacturing Xperia products in it's own factories but now all of a sudden there is a change. No more smartphone production taking place in Sony's factories in Chonburi, Bang Kadi and Wuxi.

What Impact can this have?

This decision to switch from self manufacturing to OEM not only confirms the on-going rumours but also seems to be a permanent change. There is no chance of the company shifting back to it's factories for the flagship series production.

The brand did use OEM for other models but did not use it for it's flagship series as this indeed requires a top-notch quality standard. So now it is the OEM which is responsible to maintain the top level standard for the Xperia flagship smartphones.
