The automobile sector is at an all-time high India and EV sales are soaring, the existing limitations notwithstanding. While big players including Tata Motors are a leading player in the fast-emerging sector, other contenders also want to grab a large pie. Skoda Auto, a part of the Volkswagen Group is one of the aspirants eyeing the EV sector keenly. The German carmaker is now planning to launch new EV models to take on the rivals.
As per the newest reports, Skoda Auto will unveil an electric vehicle aiming the mass market, priced below approx INR 20 lakhs. Notably, the VW group has said it is serious about focusing on green vehicle production and the move by Skoda resonates with the focus of the parent group. Skoda Auto said in a recent media interaction that they will launch Enyaq-a premium vehicle and that will be followed by a more affordable model.
Skoda is aware of the rising trends of Indian car buyers to choose hybrid and Electric vehicles over fuel-powered ones. However, it is also aware of the price-sensitive nature of the Indian buyers. Skoda is not averse to tying up with local brands in India to unveil affordable vehicles including EVs. While the industry buzz hints at a possible collaboration with Mahindra, The VW group is yet to confirm it officially. Skoda may make use of Volkswagen Group’s new MEB21F platform for that car.
Picking a local partner for EV production may help Skoda in cost reduction to an extent. However, it will have to cope with rivals like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors who have made good progress in this domain.
