NVIDIA has created such a dream GPU for graphics card fans and PC hardware enthusiasts that it goes by the name of RTX 4090. Unfortunately, a recent event with an RTX 4090 turned it into one such card that could never have a good soul revived into it: its terrible amount of damage left it dead beyond any hope. Many repair attempts ended up fruitless.

How It All Started
This RTX 4090 was way overcooked and was now "cooked." Circuits and VRAM chips inside the GPU got shorted, such that they were automatically turned off; the performance is dropped altogether. The hardware repair team first started working on he problem with the VRAM chip. Generally, if a memory chip is defective, swapping it with a fresh part typically restores the GPU functionality. Not the case here.
The Attempt of Signal Patching
After the VRAM replacement, the card had a problem with signal integrity. The next step was for the technicians to try all possible signal patch operations on the nonfunctional PCBs as a result of destroyed traces. This would entail trying to rebuild the very damaged connections using micro-wires, known as "tangle them in a mess." However, it was a serious problem because it dealt with buried PCBs; they weren't fixable from the outside.
Why The Repair Failed of RTX 4090
High-end GPUs are constructed using multi-layered PCBs and contain numerous fine copper traces that are hidden in inner layers. When these burn from extreme heat and shorting, the traces are virtually impossible to repair. This card sustained just this kind of damage, which is why VRAM replacement failed as signal patching did.

What Has Been Learned Here?
From this incident, one gets to learn that high-end GPUs are not always repairable. If damage shoots deep, almost invariably, the card concludes itself into a place of 'beyond redemption'. It makes for an insight that cool temperatures, a consistent power supply, and proper monitoring are quite significant when using a costly GPU such as the RTX 4090.
For one to feel bereaved with the demise of one of his beloved RTX 4090, so much so that this fiasco of repairs serves as a reminder to all present on how GPUs should be maintained. This GPU has high capacity and yet needs to have caution and alertness to prevent excessive heat damage and electrical damage. Damage to the inner layers of the PCB gives hope for resurrection close to zero.
