Video game developer id Software is mostly famous for the long running franchise Doom series, which is often considered a cult title. From 1993, Doom has dominated the video game industry, and it is also believed that the first part of the series revolutionized the first person shooter, aka the FPS genre.

The same company also brought in the famous Quake series in 1996, which had a similar pattern of gameplay to the Doom series. Sometimes, it even felt like Quake was nothing but an expansion for Doom. But the storylines in both video games were different, and despite similarities, they were different video games.

Quake 5

What happened to Quake 5, which was planned but never came out

With the success of the first part, id Software released a sequel by the name Quake II in 1997, which was graphically enhanced by the time and was even more fun to play. Much like Doom, they started running a series of the Quake franchise. At a point, they discontinued the Doom series but did not stop Quake.

Quake III Arena was released in December 1999, and it was also been a big success. The series was on pause for six years, and in 2005, id Software released the much awaited Quake IV, which also met tremendous success, much like its previous counterparts.

Quake 5 had been a long requested title, but never happened

But after the 4th installation, the series kind of stopped, much like Doom. Despite the series having been a big success, id Software could not continue it just like the other giants by the developers; Doom. However, according to Dr. Hingis, Quake 5 was in development during the time of Doom 2016 version, but was cancelled. He wrote the following on X/Twitter;

Quake 5

Quake 5 was potentially in works during the development of Doom 2016

“Quake 5 was in development at Id on & off during the development of both Doom 4 (1.0), RAGE and Cancelled during the development of Doom 2016. A while ago I stumbled across a website of a current Id employee who uploaded some of their work on the project onto their gallery.”
