PayPal users in Germany can use contactless payments from iPhone by using the app instead of Apple Pay. Apple has been forced to open this third party technology in Europe. This method is acceptable at physical store terminals that accept Mastercard.
This step was prompted by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. it forced Apple to open this technology. This feature has been announced earlier this month as The Verge report says. This new feature is only available in iPhone only, not in extend to watches of Apple.

Before PayPal, What Was Another Method of Payment?
Contactless payment options on iPhone were available through Apple Pay only before the Europe’s Digital Markets Act started the new feature on iPhone. This payment feature was available until January 2024, when Apple needed to grant a third party app access to the same NFC chip used by Apple Pay.
Any Other Company Was Allowed for Contactless payment on iPhone
A Norwegian company Vipps MobilePay was the first contactless payment app that was used for payment on the iPhone in 2024.

Other Plans
In future, the company has plans to extend its pay later feature in Germany. The feature known as “Ratenzahlung To Go” in Germany offers users to pay for their in-store purchase through installments in 3,6 12 or 24 months. Along with the installment offer the company will offer a cashback reward system also for the users.
As the managing director of PayPal Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Joerg Kablitz said,” Put simply, we believe this is better than cash. Our App will make it easy and safe to pay with your phone in stores, it will give you more choice in how and when you pay, and even better- PayPal will help put money back in your pocket.”
He also said that the Tap To Pay feature is “the biggest ever investment in product development for our customers in Germany,” and the company’s plan will be available nationwide in the coming week.
