The Surface is one of the popular devices from the stable of Microsoft, for sure. However, the technology giant has stopped offering support for the first-generation Surface Duo. So, it will not get any more security and OS updates. The device reached the end of a 3-year update cycle this month. As it is, the Surface Duo faced several hazards in its lifecycle including software update delays and sluggish sales. It received Android 12L after a gap and that was the last OS update it got.
The Surface Duo with its sibling Surface Neo was announced back in October 2019 and Duo was unveiled in September 2020. The dual-screen Android device did come with its limitations but it also became a favorite with the geeks eventually. The end of support is not exactly an unexpected move by Microsoft. The device support documentation has it mentioned clearly.
Microsoft did try a lot to make the Surface Duo woo the niche buyers. It resorted to heavy price cuts, for example. The efforts did pay off, at least among the homebrew software development groups. It was later replaced by Surface Duo 2. The latter will get OS and security updates until October 2024. Reports hint at the launch of a 3rd generation Surface with no hinge but Microsoft has kept mum on the topic.
