The Indian Government recently took a big step in controlling the nation's online entertainment space. The government banned popular OTT apps like Ullu, Desiflix, ALTT (former ALTBalaji), and Big Shots. The major reason behind this is the volume of adult content that is streamed on these platforms, a quantity that is too high, causing the nation to move away from its social and cultural fabric.

What Apps Are Prohibited?

The following are the apps that are prohibited:

Ullu App: This app has been used long enough to stream sexually suggestive and adult web series.

Desiflix: Although it is a new OTT, its content is primarily of the adult and bold genre.

ALTT (earlier name of ALTBalaji): Once, this producer of television serials, Ekta Kapoor's platform, too used to show a lot of adult content.

Big Shots: Despite not being very popular, its content was of the same type.

All these apps have been banned under the Indian IT Act and Digital Media Policy.

Why The Indian Government Ban?

The government had stated that the content one could find on these applications was turning out to be harmful for society, especially among teenagers and young adults. Additionally, in most cases, there was no age verification or censorship on this content, due to which kids could easily gain access to it.

Besides, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and other organizations had been complaining time and again that such applications were misleading children.

Future Plans

The government has stated that all adult content-based websites and applications will be monitored closely, and additional apps will be prohibited if necessary. In addition, the government requires all streaming platforms to follow a concise content policy and mandatory age authentication of viewers.

Public Reaction

The majority of users have welcomed this move. They think that this step will be for society's good. But some users have proposed that 'mature content' might have been regulated and not prohibited.

This strong move by the Indian government is a big step towards making the Indian digital space healthier. According to experts, this type of decision by the government is to be welcomed for stricter regulation and awareness in the future.
