Lidar is used for some rather advanced processes, including in the arenas of self-driving cars, obstacle detection, and safe navigation. Lidar sets off a little ripple effect of lights which roughly in few seconds kills your smartphone camera use.

Car LiDAR

What exactly Non?

It simply sends very powerful infrared laser beams all over the environment in order to detect or conceptualize about the nearby objects. The light, fully invisible to naked eyesight, is also most powerful at that particular wavelength and is placed most of the time from either the front or roof of a car, where it sends laser light and builds a 3D structure map with a frequency of around a few thousand times a second.

Will Lidar really damage the cameras on smartphones?

What distinguishes an ordinary camera from a smartphone camera? The major difference would be in the very high sensitivity of their respective CMOS sensors to light. A near shot or video that is probably taken of a car employing LiDar-stabilized laser-zoom imaging or in telephoto camera may very well show a clear line traced by the invisible laser on this sensor.

Possible alternatives would include:

*Occasional severe black and white dots-;

*"Lines" flickering on-screen; and

*Any permanent damage inflicted on the camera sensor.

Unfortunately, no such damage can be reverted with any update or factory reset.

Under What Conditions Is It at High Risk?

Recording in a close video to the LiDAR car.
Zoom in, but keep the shot directed at the sensor.
Nighttime types when LIDAR is lossy.
When professional modes or manual exposure modes are being used.

All that extra headache: electric and driverless vehicles.

How to protect your cell phone

Do not attempt shooting directly at the LiDAR sensor of the car with your camera. This will involve very close video records or photo-shooting under slight zoom, simply fixating on the sensor especially if you are filming uploads keeping a good distance from an electric or autonomous car.

Conclusion

Alas, it is one of two exceptions so far that are turning the future of humanity-size deep into dependence on LiDAR technology, the latter of which would save still a more life. Damage can be avoided by creating awareness and maintaining a safe distance.

The phone is worth saving-a lousy camera shot is at least something.
