The 38-year-old veteran made the announcement following India’s drawn third Test against Australia in Brisbane on Wednesday, December 18, nailing the end of a stellar 14-year international career.

Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 dismissals in 106 matches. His tally of 37 five-wicket hauls is joint-second best in Test history alongside Shane Warne, only behind the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan (67). Known for his ability to outfox batters, Ashwin also holds the record for dismissing the most left-handers in Test cricket-an incredible 268 victims. Across all formats, Ashwin has claimed 765 international wickets in 287 matches, ranking him second among Indian bowlers, behind Anil Kumble’s 956 scalps. Globally, he stands 11th on the all-time list.
In addition to his bowling achievements, Ashwin earned a record-equalling 11 Player-of-the-Series awards in Test cricket, tying with Muralitharan. Ashwin’s career highlights also include significant contributions to India’s ICC triumphs. He was part of the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad and played a championed role in the 2013 Champions Trophy victory. While his performances in limited-overs cricket were commendable, it was in the Test arena that he truly glittered.

Ashwin’s journey to international cricket began with his exceptional performances in the IPL, where he made his baby footsteps with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under MS Dhoni’s captaincy to the glorified wizard in the history of cricket. Known for his ability to deliver under pressure, especially during Powerplay overs, Ashwin became a Bramhastra in CSK’s title-winning campaigns.
Following his international retirement, Ashwin will continue his cricketing journey in the IPL. He will rejoin CSK for the 2025 season, having been signed by the franchise during the recent mega-auction.
